ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY, N.Y. (WWTI) - The St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services is hosting a food drive from now until November 17.
The drive aims to help residents facing food insecurity during the ongoing federal government shutdown. According to a press release from DSS, the initiative will continue even if the shutdown ends, and whether or not SNAP benefits are restored.
Many houses that rely on SNAP are facing food insecurity due to the shutdown, which has delayed November's benefits from being paid out.
“Our priority is making sure families have access to basic necessities,” said DSS Commissioner Joseph Seeber. “With the delay in federal SNAP funding, local food pantries are feeling the strain—and community support is more important than ever.”
