Citing ongoing outbreaks in nine provinces and the Northwest Territories, Canada’s public health agency announced Monday that the nation had lost its status as a country where the disease had been eliminated.
“Canada is currently experiencing a large, multi-jurisdictional outbreak of measles that began in October 2024 with cases in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Saskatchewan, and the Northwest Territories,” the agency announced in a news release.
“While transmission has slowed recently, the outbreak has persisted for over 12 months, primarily within under-vaccinated communities.”
The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) said it was notified by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) that Canada no longer holds
