MISSISSIPPI — As cold weather settles over the state, the Coahoma County Fire Department is one of many departments that have taken to Facebook to remind their residents to take precautions to prevent fires and other winter hazards.
“Stay warm — and safe,” the department said in a public safety message this week, sharing important reminders about space heaters and other seasonal dangers.
Fire officials warn that space heaters should be kept at least three feet away from anything that can burn, such as curtains, bedding and furniture. Heaters should be plugged directly into a wall outlet, never into extension cords or power strips. Residents are urged to turn off heaters before leaving a room or going to bed and to keep them away from water and damp areas.
