At least eight people died and several were injured in an explosion near the historic Red Fort in India’s capital New Delhi, one of the most crowded areas in the city.

A blast occurred in a moving car around 7 p.m. local time on Monday and the cause is being investigated, Satish Golcha, the Commissioner of Delhi Police, told reporters. “A few” people died, he said, while the Press Trust of India reported eight dead, citing unnamed authorities.

“Orders have been given to examine all nearby CCTV cameras,” Home Minister Amit Shah said in a televised address. “We are exploring all possibilities and will conduct a thorough investigation.”

TV visuals showed people running around mangled and charred vehicles as small fires burned all around and glass crunched underfoot.
