Donald Trump has sent a letter to the BBC threatening legal action following turmoil over the editing of a speech by the US president in a Panorama documentary.

On Monday, the public service broadcaster's director general, Tim Davie, and CEO of BBC News, Deborah Turness, announced their resignations over the misleading edit.

The clip - which was broadcast a week before last year's US presidential elections - spliced parts of Trump's January 6 speech to suggest he urged violence at the Capitol, omitting context from the original transcript.

The 2021 riots in Washington resulted in five deaths, including one police officer who was beaten by rioters.

Critics said the Panorama edit removed a section where Mr Trump said he wanted supporters to demonstrate peacefully.
