United Airlines said it was cutting more than 700 flights scheduled for early this week due to ongoing air traffic restrictions issued during the federal government shutdown.
While the shutdown appears poised to end soon, the government has not yet reopened and the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) order to reduce air traffic remains in place. Air traffic controllers have worked without pay during the shutdown, with some not showing up for work as it has dragged on.
United told USA TODAY on Monday, Nov. 10, that it had cancelled 190 flights for Monday, 269 for Tuesday, and 271 for Wednesday, totaling 730 flights.
"We will continue to make rolling updates to our schedule if the government shutdown continues and share the latest information as we have it," the airline said in a Nov. 10 statement.
The cuts come after Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said on Wednesday, Nov. 5, that 40 major airports will see a 10% cut in flights. Duffy had previously warned of staffing shortages among air traffic controllers across the United States amid the record-breaking government shutdown. On Monday, Nov. 10, President Donald Trump demanded they return to work immediately in a Truth Social post, threatening to dock the pay of those who didn't.
FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford told CEOs of major airlines that the flight cuts would begin at a 4% reduction on Nov. 7, rise to 5% on Nov. 8 and 6% on Nov. 9 before hitting 10% this week.

What happens if my United Airlines flight is canceled?
Travelers with flights booked for Nov. 6 through Nov. 13 who no longer wish to fly are eligible for a full refund, even if their flight is not affected, the company said. This includes non-refundable tickets and basic economy tickets, which are not usually eligible for free changes.
Those looking to reschedule can do so without being charged change fees or fare differences, but only if the new flight is between six days before and six days after your original travel date and booked for the same cabin between the same cities originally booked.
"If your new trip is after November 5, 2026, or is to a different destination, we’ll still waive any change fees but you might have to pay a fare difference depending on the flight," United said on its website.
