MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - On this day, Nov. 10, 1975, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald sunk in Lake Superior.
The wreck killed all 29 crew members on board. The Fitzgerald is the largest ship to ever sink on the Great Lakes.
On its last voyage, the Edmund Fitzgerald left from Superior, Wisconsin, on Nov. 9 and was bound for a steel mill near Detroit, Michigan.
Later that day, amid gale warnings, Captain Ernest McSorely contacted another ship on the lake to report the Fitzgerald was in “one of the worst seas I’ve ever been in.”
The ship was damaged, its radar equipment was obscured and it was listed badly to one side. A few hours later, the Fitzgerald told another ship it was holding its own, but disappeared from radar screens around 10 minutes after that communication.
