MONROE, La. (KNOE) - The Louisiana Wildlife Federation is urging North Louisiana hunters to participate in its free testing of harvested deer meat for Chronic Wasting Disease.
CWD is a deadly neurological disease that affects multiple members of the deer family. It can spread through contact between animals and contaminated environments.
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries said it encourages all hunters who harvest a deer this hunting season to get the meat tested for CWD -- no matter if the deer appears healthy or not.
Officials said that although there is no evidence that CWD can infect humans, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that venison from CWD-positive deer not be consumed.
