It started with little fanfare and no big names. There was no red carpet, no gala event.

And the movies? Stuff that wasn’t coming to cinemas any time soon.

But five years after it started, the Niagara Artists Centre’s (NAC) Mighty Niagara Film Festival has already outlasted some of the bigger, flashier events that tried to call Niagara home. They were put on by “charlatans,” says NAC director Stephen Remus, “eating up a lot of resources and energy, and watching those film festivals fail.”

“Slow and steady” was the game plan for the event when it launched in 2020, and it has grown at a steady but manageable pace, says Remus.

“The Mighty Niagara Film Fest is a homegrown thing,” he says. “It’s put together by people who live here and are committed to Niagara. The best part of that is that
