WASHINGTON —
The longest government shutdown in U.S. history could end this week if a bipartisan Senate deal passes, House Speaker Mike Johnson said Monday.
"I'm stating the obvious to all my colleagues, Republicans and Democrats in the House. You need to begin right now, returning to the Hill. We have to do this as quickly as possible," House Speaker Mike Johnson said.
If the bill passes in the Senate, it must return to the House for passage before President Donald Trump can sign it into law.
The proposed Senate deal would fund the government until January, fully fund SNAP for a fiscal year, provide backpay for furloughed federal workers, and reinstate laid-off workers. However, it does not address healthcare subsidies under the Affordable Care Act, a key issue for Democrats who sup
