STONE RIDGE, N.Y. — The detention of Ali Sajad Faqirzada , an Afghan refugee and New Paltz resident, “shows there is no line (the federal government) won’t cross,” Ulster County Executive Jen Metzger said Monday after a press conference supporting him.

On Tuesday, Oct. 14, Faqirzada was attending a court hearing seeking asylum when he was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He has been in federal custody ever since.

The press conference at Christ the King Episcopal Church was led by U.S. Rep. Pat Ryan, D-Gardiner. The event was billed as a “speak-out continuing the community-wide push” for Faqirzada’s release.
