PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The Phoenix Zoo is mourning the loss of a beloved animal that has been a zoo staple for eight years.

Zoo officials announced on Sunday that Fernando, a Linne’s two-toed sloth, passed away. Staff say Fernando’s death was sudden.

Last year, Fernando was diagnosed with “severe mineralization of the aorta and the aortic arterial branches,” according to the zoo. Over the past week, keepers noticed he was having trouble breathing. Fernando was taken to a veterinary hospital for treatment and oxygen therapy. However, despite the swift action taken by keepers, Fernando unfortunately passed away.

The furry friend was a favorite among many visitors and zoo staff. He first arrived at the zoo in 2017 and quickly captured the hearts of all who came across him.
