JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Heartbreaking images are coming out of the Philippines, where the government has declared a “State of Calamity.”

Just six weeks after a major earthquake , the island of Cebu was hit on Nov. 4 by a powerful typhoon that left entire neighborhoods buried in mud and families homeless. Now, typhoon damage is hitting another part of the Philippines.

For most of us, it’s easy to think, “That’s so far away. We have our own problems here." But Jacksonville has the largest Filipino community of any city in Florida — and for many here, this disaster feels very close to home.

Among them are Sara Lee and Les Tilka, longtime missionaries from Jacksonville who’ve spent nearly 30 years working in Cebu. Sara Lee's family, who now live in Cebu, shared photos with First Coast
