COLUMBIA, S.C. — A Weather Impact Alert and a freeze warning were in effect into Tuesday as temperatures were expected to be in the upper 20s in the Midlands. To help protect the community, the City of Columbia opened its overflow shelter to provide a warm place for those in need.

Transitions Homeless Center reported that all 260 of its beds were already full. The city of Columbia overflow shelter, which can accommodate up to 240 people, opens whenever temperatures fall below 40 degrees. Folks can take the COMET bus from their Central station to get to the shelter.

Craig Currey, CEO of Transitions, said nights like this bring hundreds of people seeking warmth and safety.
