TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - The suspect accused of being impaired and speeding when he hit and killed three University of Arizona students walking near campus appeared in court Monday, Nov. 17, for his arraignment.

Louis John Artal, 19, is facing three counts of manslaughter but was originally facing murder charges for the crash.

He was being held on a $250,000 cash bond, but was not in custody as of Monday.

If convicted of manslaughter, he would likely face far fewer years in prison than if convicted on three counts of second-degree murder.

The Tucson Police Department said Artal hit 21-year-old Sophia Troetel, 22-year-old Josiah Santos, and 21-year-old Katya Rosaura Castillo Mendoza at 2nd Street and Euclid around 11 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30.
