With the number of Canadians who fought for Canada during wartime declining every year, it is important to remind ourselves of the meaning of Remembrance Day .
On Tuesday at 11 a.m. — the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month — we pause what we are doing and, for two minutes, remember in silence the supreme sacrifice of our fellow citizens who served our nation in war.
The time of 11 a.m. recalls the signing of the armistice that ended the First World War 107 years ago on Nov. 11, 1918.
Because of the march of time, there are no living veterans of that war today in Canada, in which 66,000 of our fellow citizens fought and died.
When the armistice was signed, the hope was that it marked the end of the war to end all wars.
