PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - Mayor Keith Wilson spoke out against proposed cuts to homeless encampment sweeps on Monday, ahead of a scheduled vote by the Portland City Council on the Fall Supplemental Budget this week.

Since Nov. 1, the city has resumed enforcement of its public camping ordinance in an effort to combat the city’s ongoing homeless crisis.

The “Morillo 1″ amendment to the city’s Technical Adjustment Ordinance, introduced by councilors Angelita Morillo and Mitch Green, calls to redirect funds from what the councilors call the “costly and cruel practice” of homeless encampment sweeps in favor of reinvesting in “proven, life-saving services” like rental assistance, food aid, and immigrant resources instead.
