Police say a 17-year-old caused more than $160,000 in damage after doing donuts on a green at the Venetian Bay Golf Course.

“That is by far the most damage from any vandalism I can remember recently in New Smyrna Beach,” said Police Chief Chris Kirk, New Smyrna Beach police. “Kids think they’re just being kids, but the consequences here are serious.”

The incident happened about three weeks ago, and investigators say the teen started talking about it soon after.

“When you’re 16 or 17 years old and you’re the one responsible, you’re telling somebody or a lot of somebodies,” said Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood. “He told friends, and there may have been some social media exchanges we’re looking into as well.”
