The west side of New Smyrna Beach has a solution in the works they hope will solve some of the recent flooding issues.
After Hurricane Ian, the water in New Smyrna Beach was high enough to kayak in.
A series of rainstorms over the weekend was all it took for homes in NSB to flood. Days later, the water is still there.
"It flooded all over the place," said Madison York, a resident in the west side neighborhood. "It was like a swamp."
With so much water after just a little bit of rain, Volusia County residents are worried another hurricane will devastate the community.
Because homes were built decades ago, some even half a century ago, the structure wasn't made to withstand such large amounts of rain and flooding. There were also no thought-out storm drainage systems.
