Former Local 5 Chief Meteorologist Tom Mahoney remembered for joy, faith, and mentorship

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – Local 5 News is mourning the loss of former Chief Meteorologist Tom Mahoney, a man who brought energy, warmth, and authenticity to local broadcasting for decades.

Mahoney first appeared on northeast Wisconsin airwaves in 1972 before briefly leaving for another market. When he returned, he quickly became a local favorite — a familiar face who was as much a part of the community as the weather itself.

From covering EAA to attending Country USA, Mahoney immersed himself in the people and places of Wisconsin. He often visited classrooms to inspire young students and share his passion for meteorology.

Throughout his career, Mahoney’s humor and charm shined. He interviewed Big Bird from Sesame Street, kissed the Blarney Stone in Ireland, and once competed in the Goofy
