URBANA, Ill. (WAND) - Local officials are urging residents and businesses to stay vigilant as a new email scam floods inboxes with phony invoices disguised to look like they came from government agencies — including the City of Urbana.

According to the city, scammers are sending out messages that appear official, complete with government-style logos and formatting. The invoices request payment for services or fees that recipients never requested — a telltale sign of fraud.

City leaders stress that these emails are not legitimate, and anyone who receives an unexpected invoice should pause before taking action.

“If you receive a bill you weren’t anticipating, do NOT pay it,” the city warned in a post on social media. “Take a moment to verify it.”
