COLUMBUS, Ohio — Less than 12 months ago, Avon High School had never won a state championship in any team sport — perpetually finding itself among Northeast Ohio's most heartbroken "bridesmaids."

What a difference a year makes, because now, the "Mighty Eagles" might have a claim as the best athletic program in the Buckeye State.

After finally getting over the hump with a Division II football title last December, Avon instantly tripled the hardware in its trophy case Sunday by capturing OHSAA championships in both D-II boys soccer and girls volleyball. The Eagles' soccer team took down Kings in a 1-0 overtime thriller, while the volleyball squad outlasted Anthony Wayne 3 sets to 1 in a tough match.

The soccer showdown saw the Eagles and Knights remain scoreless through the first 89 min
