Initial approval: Anti-camping ordinance

Council approved the first reading of a new ordinance prohibiting lying down or residing on public property within the city of Greenville.

The proposed law is primarily directed at the city’s homeless population. Three of the seven City Council members voted against the ordinance – Lillian Brock Flemming, Ken Gibson and Russel Stall. Voting in favor were John DeWorken, Dorothy Dowe, Wil Brasington and Mayor Knox White.

A second reading of the ordinance is required. If approved, it would go into effect on March 1, 2026.
