A council in Melbourne's inner north has knocked back a planning application for a 24-hour fast food restaurant proposed for a busy shopping strip, arguing it doesn't fit with the character of the area.

The City of Darebin council voted to refuse an application from McDonald's to amend a permit for a restaurant on High Street in Northcote, which was named the world's coolest street in 2024, according to Time Out .

A report by council officers presented to a Monday night meeting found the site on the popular retail, pub and live music strip was already zoned for a convenience restaurant, and recommended councillors grant the permit.
