WALTON, Ky. —

On the eve of Veterans Day, a Northern Kentucky veteran was surprised with her first Marine Corps. birthday party.

Sergeant Ruth Wilkinson turned 91 and was joined by local Marines who celebrated with her at an assisted living facility in Walton. Advertisement

Ruth took part in a Marine birthday tradition, in which the oldest Marine in the room and the youngest cut the cake together.

The youngest in the room was Boone County Sheriff’s deputy Steve Pater.

Wilkinson served four years as an aerologist, during which she created hand-drawn weather maps for military pilots.
