A new report has revealed commercial airliners narrowly avoided serious accidents when taking off from Melbourne Airport on two separate occasions in 2023.

The findings of the report — released on Tuesday by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) — revealed two separate flights overran runway 34, which has been temporarily shorted by more than 1.5 kilometres for resurfacing works.

Both a Malaysia Airlines flight on September 7, 2023, and a Bamboo Airways flight on September 18, 2023, took off after the shortened runway ended, and within a 450-metre safety zone ahead of the repair works.

The Malaysia Airlines flight passed over the work site at an altitude of 7m, while the Bamboo Airways flight was just 4.5m off the ground when it passed over the work site.
