MASON CITY, Iowa.-Captain Mike McKelvey will be sworn in as the new chief of the Mason City Police Department in February, 2026 after Chief Jeff Brinkley's retirement on Friday, Nov. 14.
Captain McKelvey says in the meantime he's be serving as interim chief as Brinkley serves out the rest of his remaining vacation time.
McKelvey says he joined the force in October, 1994 and over the past 30 years he has served in a lot of roles as a K-9 officers, a sergeant and a captain.
In June of 1995, 10 days after graduating from police training he says his early career was influenced by the disappearance of KIMT News 3's anchor, Jodi Huisentruit.
He says it is hope of his that the department can put the case to rest before his own retirement.
