CLEVELAND, Ohio — Veterans Day is Tuesday, meaning federal, state and local government offices will be closed for the federal holiday.

The holiday that honors those who have served in the U.S. armed forces. It originated as Armistice Day, marking the end of World War I on Nov. 11, 1918.

President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the first Armistice Day on Nov. 11, 1919, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The day became a national holiday when Congress officially recognized it in 1938.

The holiday underwent a name change in 1954, becoming Veterans Day to honor all Americans who have served in wars, not just those who fought in World War I.
