Construction is underway for Mobile’s latest “Complete Streets” project along Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue. Crews began working to rebuild the roadway from Butchers Lane to Broad Street.

Mobile Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis said the project is a "major investment" in the area. Upgrades are needed because the area is one of the oldest in Mobile.

The $11.2 million project will include new sidewalks and curbs, as well as utility, gutter, stormwater and infrastructure upgrades. It is funded in part with federal RESTORE Act money, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT), the Mobile Metropolitan Planning Organization, the Mobile Area Water and Sewer System (MAWSS) and the City of Mobile.

Some lanes will be closed during construction, but the roadway will remain open to traffic.
