A Newark, N,J man wanted out of Hartford, CT was jailed after police said he stole more than $12,000 from a gas station.

Mount Olive police responded to the Flanders Shell Gas Station on Route 206 on Sunday, Oct. 12, after the station owner discovered that the office had been broken into and approximately $12,400 was missing from the safe, according to Officer Thomas Cuff and Detective James Carney.

Through the course of their investigation, detectives identified the suspect as 57-year-old Albert Smith, police said.

Detective Carney determined Smith had fled to Hartford, Connecticut, where local police later took him into custody on Oct. 16, authorities said.

He was extradited back to New Jersey on Nov. 3, and lodged in the Essex County Correctional Facility, police said.

Smith was charged with Burglary, Theft of Movable Property, and Transporting Property Known to Be Derived from Criminal Activity, according to police.
