Donald Trump’s drive to get the new stadium being built for the NFL Washington Commanders named after himself was on the receiving end of a beat-down Tuesday morning from conservative columnist Jim Geraghty, who found himself wondering if he has ever heard of a worse facility-naming proposal.

Geraghty, a regular columnist for the conservative National Review, took to the editorial pages of the Washington Post to point out that a stadium in Washington, DC, would be a disaster.

Under a headline that bluntly stated, “Please, Commanders. Anything but the ‘Donald J. Trump Dome,’ the conservative got right to the point by asserting, “A significant chunk of the Commanders fan base hates Trump with as much passion and fury as they hate the Dallas Cowboys," as was evidenced by the president being loudly booed during an appearance at a game this past Sunday (see video below).

Noting the team's struggles under former highly unpopular owner Daniel Snyder, who was forced to sell by the league due to a multitude of scandals and allegations, Geraghty sarcastically asked, “Hasn’t the team’s fan base suffered enough?”

“Neither Trump nor the federal government is paying for the new stadium. The Commanders will cover $2.7 billion of the construction costs, and the District of Columbia will contribute approximately $1 billion in public funds for the project,” he wrote, before pointing out that naming rights are normally sold to the highest bidder — and Trump has already indicated he has has no intention of getting out his wallet to pay.

More importantly, the conservative warned, naming a stadium after Trump in what can be considered hostile territory would turn off the fan base the new ownership is attempting to regrow.

“I suspect a lot of Commanders fans would prefer any company with any reputation — Enron, Theranos, TikTok or even Ashley Madison — than to have their beloved team play in the ‘Donald J. Trump Dome,’” he predicted, before adding there are already more than enough venues sporting the Trump name to satisfy his ego.

He added that Josh Harris, the managing partner of the Commanders’ ownership group, should fend off the advances of the “temperamental and erratic” president.

“Naming a football stadium after Trump in the District — where he won 6.47 percent of the vote in 2024 — would be the most incongruous and ironic choice since Republicans honored Ronald Reagan by naming a federal office building and an airport after the man who fired air traffic controllers for violating their contract by going on strike,” he suggested.

“The Commanders ownership cannot let that happen. Please let there be one person named Harris who can deny Trump what he wants.”
