Georgia residents have felt a shock this week as cold temperatures hit the state unusually early in the season.
Meteorologists say this pattern is rare and unusually intense for November.
"It is hard to put into words how extreme this early season pattern is for the eastern part of the country," said Meteorologist Ross Ellet of 13 ABC in Ohio on Facebook . "If this same pattern happened in January, you would be looking at a high just above 0 degrees!"
Why is it so cold in Georgia?
The jet stream is largely responsible, driving cold Arctic air far into the Southeast. According to Glenn Burns , Chief Meteorologist Emeritus, the cold air will lift north by Friday, allowing above-average temperatures to return.
