Former LSU football coach Brian Kelly has entered a legal dispute with LSU over whether he was fired "for cause" — and whether he is owed his full $54 million buyout.
On Monday, Kelly filed a lawsuit asking a judge to confirm that he was fired without cause after LSU representatives told him the school was now seeking to fire him with cause.
If fired for cause, LSU would not have to pay Kelly his full buyout. But if fired without cause, Kelly would be owed 90% of his remaining base salary and supplemental compensation, which would be paid through 2031, under the terms of his contract.
