A little over two years ago, Kelly Mann thought she was coming down with "the worst pink eye of my life," she recalls.

She had redness in both eyes, but the antibiotic eye drops she had didn't seem to help. Then, just as mysteriously as it had started, the issue was gone about a week later, Mann, now 38 and based in Abilene, Texas, tells TODAY.com.

A few more days later, however, her symptoms came back, beginning a cycle that would continue about six times between April and June.

"Then one night while watching TV, I went to itch my arm and felt a lump ," Mann, a university professor and mother of three, recalls. "My husband was asleep, so I kind of panicked and went back and forth, like, 'Is this what I’m really feeling, or am I making this up in my head?'"
