HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Steel of West Virginia announced Wednesday it plans to eliminate approximately 100 jobs as part of a strategic, multi-year, $30 million investment aimed at modernizing its Huntington plant and ensuring sustainable operations.
The company, which specializes in specialty steel products, currently employs more than 600 individuals at the facility. The planned change involves permanently idling the plant’s decades-old melt shop, which SWVA described as a "1950s vintage" operation that has reached the end of its life cycle.
While the plant’s two rolling mills will receive significant investment to improve productivity and efficiency, the closure of the melt shop means the facility intends to preserve approximately 500 jobs, resulting in a net loss of around 100 positions.
