PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — Newport Mayor Jan Kaplan is opening up about the Department of Homeland Security evaluating the Newport Airport as a potential U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility.

Kaplan said DHS has yet to give any notice to city leaders about the effort, instead finding out through third-party inquiries about leasing a piece of land next to the Newport Airport.

“We found out in dribs and drabs,” Kaplan said. “We’ve still to this point have not gotten any formal notice that something is happening.”

Despite the lack of a formal notice from DHS, Kaplan said he felt obligated to share with the community
