The efforts made by New Haven Public Schools to address student chronic absenteeism appear to be working, according to the latest data.

During Monday’s Board of Education meeting, Dr. Gemma Joseph-Lumpkin provided an update on student chronic absenteeism.

In the 2021-2022 school year the rate of absenteeism was 58.1%, the following year it was 36.6%, from 2023 to 2024 it was 37.5% and in the 2024-2025 school year, the chronic absenteeism rate was 32.1%.

“It takes a very focused approach to get that work done and we’ve invested heavily in home visits and outreach to families because at the core of attendance are usually family issues,” Joseph-Lumpkin said.
