A California-based cooking influencer with more than 2 million followers was fatally shot by a sheriff’s deputy in Texas after authorities responded to a disturbance call, PEOPLE reports.
Michael Duarte, known online as “FoodWithBearHands,” was shot Nov. 8 in Castroville, Texas, by a Medina County deputy who discharged two rounds from her duty weapon. Duarte was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Deputies had been dispatched after a 911 call reported a “male subject with a knife acting erratically,” a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office told TMZ .
The circumstances surrounding the shooting differ from initial reports of Duarte’s death.
A GoFundMe page created to support his family originally described his passing as a “horrible accident” during a visit to Texas.
