GRAND FORKS – As many residents of the greater Grand Forks area still struggle with food insecurity, local leaders have another way to help those in need save more money.

Cities Area Transit since Nov. 6 has been offering free rides on its buses and paratransit vehicles for those going to and from local food pantries. The free rides are currently being offered until Dec. 31, but Grand Forks Mayor Brandon Bochenski said on Wednesday the city will likely end the offer sooner if the government shutdown is lifted in the coming days.

“I think there certainly are people that are in circumstances where you don’t want someone to go hungry, and if transportation is the barrier, we want to do away with that,” he said.
