LUFKIN, Texas — The City of Lufkin is evaluating ways to preserve a recently uncovered Dr Pepper mural believed to date back to the 1920s.

The mural was revealed during site preparation for a new public parking area in downtown Lufkin. City officials and engineers immediately began assessing options for its preservation. While the mural carries historical and sentimental value for the community, analysis found that the brick wall supporting it would require extensive repair and reinforcement to remain safe.

“The city has considered many options for preserving this piece of local history,” said City Manager Kevin Gee. “However, the cost of stabilizing the deteriorating wall, combined with the deteriorated condition of the nearly 100-year-old paint, makes preservation financially unviable
