LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) - Only part of the Old Angelina County Jail still stands in Downtown Lufkin. The lone piece holds one of the city’s oldest murals.
In September demolition of the old jail was put on hold after a Dr. Pepper mural, believed to be from the 1920s, was uncovered.
After an immense amount of support from the community, Lufkin City manager Kevin Gee said they’ll do everything they can to preserve it in September.
“It has to have upkeep, and it has a certain life, and so we’re going to do everything we can to preserve and restore what’s there,” Gee said.
Preservation efforts may take a while. In a press release today, Gee said the cost to restore the mural is too expensive for the city at this time.
