DES MOINES, Iowa (Gray Media Iowa Capitol Bureau) - Food pantries across Iowa are reporting record-breaking demand as the Trump administration’s refusal to release federal funding for food assistance programs leaves millions of families without monthly benefits.

Community pantries in Iowa are trying to keep up.

At the Urbandale Food Pantry, CEO Patty Sneddon-Kisting said the facility has seen 160 new families since the end of October. The pantry typically serves about 2,200 families monthly, but that number is estimated to increase to 3,000 in November.

“We, as I mentioned, always see that uptick during the holidays just because it’s the holidays but I definitely think because of the current environment, we will continue to see that uptick well into January,” Sneddon-Kisting said.
