Josephine Diggs, who led an East Baltimore congregation and headed its Sunday school, died of old age complications Oct. 27 at her St. Paul Street home in Charles Village. She was 93.
Born in Baltimore and raised on Jefferson Street, she was the daughter of a clergyman, Bishop William Samuel Barnes Sr., and his wife Geneva Margaret Barnes, a homemaker. She was a 1950 graduate of Paul Laurence Dunbar High School.
“She was a serious student and read widely. She wanted to go to college, but understood that her family’s funds were too limited. Instead, she became a Social Security Administration clerk,” said her niece, Margaret Henry.
In 1956 she married Frontis Diggs Jr. They lived for many years on Luzerne Avenue where she raised three daughters.
