HARRISBURG, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - For some students, a school lunch might be their only guaranteed meal of the day. Now, a new partnership between the Harrisburg School District and the local nonprofit Hungry Hearts is helping ensure no child goes hungry.
In a growing district like Harrisburg, school meals have become a lifeline for many families, and the need for meal assistance has continued to rise alongside enrollment.
“We provide a free education. We provide free textbooks, and we provide free technology. Why do we charge for meals that we know kids need to learn?” said Chris Beach, the district’s child nutrition director.
