TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - Negotiations for a new Colorado River water use agreement have yet to dry up, even if they missed Tuesday’s deadline.
All parties involved issued a statement one day after Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs and a bipartisan group of Arizona legislators asked for federal assistance in the discussion.
The Central Arizona Project has been carrying Colorado River water to southern Arizona for more than three decades.
Now, states must establish new allocations from the river, but time is running out in more ways than one.
Seven states, Arizona being one of them, must establish a new compact on how they’ll divvy up the Colorado River. Their current compact is dated 1922, and they missed their negotiation deadline. All involved issued this statement on Wednesday:
