PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Gov. Katie Hobbs is asking the Trump administration to intervene in the debate over water rights for the Colorado River after seven states missed a deadline to negotiate a deal .
Forty million people rely on water from the dwindling river across seven states. The states say they will continue negotiating, but there is not much time.
The flow of the Colorado River has dropped by nearly 20% over the last 25 years because of drier conditions and higher average temperatures.
Upper and lower basin states divided
There are two camps in this debate: four states in the upper basin against three states in the lower basin. They are struggling to agree on how much to permanently reduce their water usage.
