Kindergarten enrollment fell by 88 students this year, a drop leaders connect to lower birth rates and high housing costs. DJUSD projects it could lose about 1,000 students over the next decade, reducing state funding and potentially requiring consolidation. The district has introduced two options: closing Patwin Elementary in 2028, or closing both Patwin and Birch Lane and shifting 6th graders to junior high schools. Officials are gathering public feedback through the end of November, with a final decision expected in 2027 and any changes taking effect in the 2028–2029 school year.
