Foreign Minister Penny Wong has refused to provide specifics about the new Australia-Indonesia security treaty, insisting the agreement was about consultation.

Ms Wong said on Thursday that the “watershed” agreement between governments was about “talking to each other” on matters of security.

Experts note that while the treaty signals closer ties, it does not amount to a mutual defence pact.

Australian Strategic Policy Institute Senior Analyst Gatra Priyandita told SkyNews.com.au the emphasis on consultation was largely a framework for crisis management.
