Authorities in Belize are investigating the death of a Vancouver woman whose body was discovered outside a resort on Monday. Marty Ann Thorne, 67, was found near Rawspa Cabanas in Bullet Tree Falls, a village in the Cayo district, shortly before 8 a.m. by a caretaker. The caretaker reported that he arrived at the property around 7:45 a.m. and, after calling for Thorne without a response, searched the yard and located her body near the riverside.

According to a police report, Thorne's body showed several apparent stab wounds. The authorities transported her remains to a hospital in San Ignacio, located about five kilometers away, for an autopsy. Police have also obtained surveillance footage and are seeking a man believed to be acquainted with Thorne as part of their investigation into her death.

Thorne was known in the community as the owner of Rawspa and had established herself as a prominent figure in the area. In a statement, her family expressed their heartbreak over her death and requested privacy during their time of grief. They described her as a "beloved sister, mother, grandmother, and friend to many," highlighting her compassion for people and love for the environment.

"Marty’s life was defined by kindness, generosity, and her unwavering care for others. Her family and loved ones are devastated by this senseless loss and are working with local authorities as investigations continue," the family stated.

A family member noted that Thorne frequently visited Belize and had developed a deep appreciation for the country, which had become an integral part of her life and community. Global Affairs Canada confirmed it is aware of the death of a Canadian citizen in Belize but did not provide further details due to privacy concerns. The agency stated that consular officials are in contact with Thorne's family to offer assistance as needed.
