HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A blessing for a new beginning took place in a home in a quiet Halawa neighborhood.

The home is being rebuilt from a love borne out of loss.

Nearly six years ago, the home’s owner, Kaulike Kalama, was one of two police officers killed in the line of duty in Diamond Head .

Five months later, his wife, Kaohinani, 34, died from a medical condition .

Their only child, Kaumana Kalama, was just 15.

“Honestly looks just like so different from what I’m used to, but I know that change is good,” Kaumana said.

Kaumana is in his third year at Whitworth University in Washington State, and has gotten updates on the renovation of his childhood home.

“It looks like pau, so it’s coming along,” he said. “I know I’m definitely gonna get a nostalgic sense.”
